Dummy load
A dummy load is a resistor or set of resistors that stands in for a real load, such as a speaker or antenna. It absorbs the full output power of an amplifier or transmitter and turns it into heat instead of sound or radio waves. Its resistance is chosen to match the load the device expects, for example 8 ohms for a guitar amp speaker output.
Example: A technician testing a guitar amp on the bench plugs it into an 8 ohm dummy load so it can run at full volume without making any noise.
